Charles Herzog

February 10, 1956 — April 19, 2024

Norton

Friday, April 19, 2024, Charles Edward Herzog passed away at Barberton City Hospital. Chuck, as he was known by most, was born February 10, 1956, in Rochester, NY. He spent his childhood in Greece, no, not the Country, but a city in NY. Later, his family bought a hundred-acre farm in Fancher, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Jean Marie (Ashton) Herzog, brothers Rick and James (Jim) Herzog, adopted son Jake and twin daughters. He is survived by brother Paul and sisters Mary, Debbie, Linda, Anna, Ruth, his wife of 32 years Deborah (Townsend) and children Amy, Krista, Rachel, Charlie, Sarah, Deborah and Elisabeth along with many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren Alissa Teed, Abigail Davis, Dylan Teed, Remington Jones, James Boyle V, Victoria Jones, Adelynn Herzog, and Thaddeus Davis. Though time and distance sometimes thwarted the best of intentions, he deeply loved and cared for his family despite his struggles with health difficulties through the years. He would diligently shovel any snow that might fall, and would grow any plant that might provide food.

Chuck was known for his love of nature, which was expressed in many activities. His love of gardening and trying out new varieties led to him having tried growing over 100 different varieties of beans and that is not to mention his detailed quest to find the “perfect” tomato variety. He loved camping and would never be found without a multi-tool or pocketknife close at hand. He loved learning and sharing what he learned about any part of nature from plant varieties, and birds to thunderstorms and dirt. He even had a worm farm.

His meticulous attention to detail helped him to be an avid note-taker, a ruthless editor and a wiz at his sound editing. Shadowing his dad inspired a lifelong interest and love in the printing industry. He was able to wax eloquently for hours on the differences between types of paper, ink and binding styles. He could be counted on to 100% “Mind his Ps and Qs” and spent countless hours researching what was just the perfect pencil to use on thin onion skin paper for his Bible studies.

He had a love of volunteering and helping others. He spent time helping Habitat for Humanity, delivering Meals on Wheels, and acting as an archivist for his local Church congregations. He was a dedicated member of The Restored Church of God, where he was happy to help as an archivist, writer, editor, speaker, assistant and printer.

His “MacGyver” approach to life meant that there would always be a solution to any problem, and it may not always be the most elegant, but was sure to “get the job done.” He was known to keep duct tape, bubble gum, baling twine and a metal coat hanger in his toolbox, and has used plenty of paper clips in creative ways.
He will surely be missed by many.

His funeral will be prepared by Heritage Cremation and Burial Society. A graveside service will be held at Foxfield Preserve in Wilmot, OH at 1:00 pm Thursday, April 25, 2024. A celebration of life reception will be held at The Knights of Columbus Hall, 146 N Lyman ST, Wadsworth OH 44281 from 3:00 to 7:00 following the ceremony where all are welcome to share condolences and favorite memories.
