Charles Bowie Mothes, known to his friends and family as Chuck closed his eyes for the last time on October 24th. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut the first son of Paul and Florence Mothes. Loving husband and soul mate to, Holly (Hughes) Mothes, Proud father of daughters Melissa (Cory) , Erin (Dean), and sons Charles (Sarah), Seth (Lily); grandchildren, Anthony Bordonaro, Nathan Mothes, Jacob Mothes, Emma Steinmeyer, Kennedy, Riley, and Madison Biscan, and Blake Mothes; Mother and Father-in-law Janis and Clayton Hughes; brothers, Richard and Al; Brothers in-Law, Fred Hughes, Clayton (Cindy) Hughes; Sister in-Law, Heather (Gary) McAfee; Special Nieces, Courtney (Martin) Labbe, Allie (Austin) Ladany; Special Nephews, Ian (Heidi) Bennett, Joshua and William (Sean) Hughes and many other Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Madelyn and Cindy and brother Paul.
Chuck grew up in New Islip, New York riding his bike everywhere. He loved swimming and sailing in the ocean. He joined the Air Force in 1960, serving for 8 years. He came home to take up the machining trade working for several shops in the Washington DC area. Chuck joined IBM in Washington DC as a Customer Engineer servicing equipment for the Defense Department and until moving to Cleveland, Ohio in the 70’s. In 1999 he joined The University of Akron where he retired after 16 years of service in 2015.
Chuck loved classical music, trains, computer games, camping and fishing. He spent hours with his camera taking pictures of everything, but what he favored most was his kids and his dogs. They were the subject of thousands of pictures.
Chuck’s wild side was playing Cards Against Humanity with his (adult) kids and friends. It was always a great laugh and could bring tears to your eyes with some of his card combinations.
No formal service will be held, but a reception for friends and family to gather and remember Chuck will be held Saturday, November 2nd from 2pm to 4pm at Messiah Lutheran Evangelical Church, 4700 South Main Street, Akron, Ohio.
