Mike was born in Barnesville, Ohio on January 21, 1953, to the late Wayne and Betty Stephen of Port Washington and was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Rank of Gnadenhutten and sisters-in-law, Linda DePoy of Buckhannon, WV, and Marian Stephen of Coshocton; son-in-law, Johnnie Barron of Uhrichsville.

Mike was a 1972 graduate of Indian Valley South Rebels. On May 29, 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Johnson. He worked hard to support his family, retiring from Indian Valley Local Schools after 34 years of service. Prior to that he worked full time at Alsco Anaconda and Echo Drilling simultaneously. Being the Son of a World War II veteran, Mike unapologetically loved his country and was especially patriotic. He was a quiet role model to his family who demonstrated his love for them thru his actions including caring for his special needs child. Perhaps his most notable accomplishment was that he fought and won the battle against pancreatic cancer after having been diagnosed in 1998. His favorite Bible verse was John chapter 3 verse 16.
