Diane Kay Bell (nee Lightel), age 70, passed away on March 8, 2022 in her home of 38 years in Green, OH. She was surrounded by love and family when cancer took her physical presence from us.
Diane was born on July 4, 1951 in Dover to the late Betty (Sherrets) and Eugene Lightel. They lived in New Philadelphia and Alliance before moving to Kent where Diane grew up. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1969 and studied at Kent State University, earning two Bachelor’s degrees, followed by a Master of Education and Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology. It was in a graduate class that she met fellow psychologist and love of her life, Don Bell.
Diane began her professional career as an intern for Akron Public Schools and school psychologist for James A. Garfield Schools in Garrettsville. She later worked as a contract psychologist and a field interviewer for national health research firms Westat, NORC and RTI.
Diane’s life, however, centered on her cherished family. Her consistent kindness, generosity, compassion, and desire to listen made her the “rock” everyone relied on for support. Although she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her late thirties, she was never defined by her illness. She remained passionately independent, and loved to travel, read, listen to music, and spend time with (and spoil!) her grandchildren.
Diane remains in the hearts of all those who loved her: her soulmate and husband, Donald Bell, sons, Matthew (Noëlle) Bell of Peru, IN and Michael (Aimee) Bell of Twinsburg and her adoring grandchildren, Amelia, Kilian, Oliver and Parker; brother, Rick Lightel of Akron and sister, Jeanine (Lightel) Carroll of Copley; brother-in-law, Wayne (Fran) Segulin of Macedonia; niece, Donna Segulin, nephews, David Segulin, Daniel and Jacob Carroll; June and Eva Lightel, four stepbrothers; aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 24 at 2 pm at First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 E. Market St. Akron, OH 44308. Family will receive guests prior to the service from 1—2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society
