Don LeRoy McDowell (89), born in Oklahoma, Pennsylvania on October 29, 1932, closed the final chapter of his life on May 28, 2022. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin LeRoy and Arlena Maye (Stitt) and his brother R. Dale McDowell. Don is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, his wife of 66 years Martha, and their three daughters: Sherry (David) Marshall, Kimberly (Jerry) Casalinova, Linda (Brian) Hutras; grandchildren: Kalie (Brian) Gilbert, Colin Marshall, Vanessa Hutras, Greydon Casalinova, Louis Hutras, Jackson Hutras; and one great granddaughter: McKenna Mae Gilbert.
He met the love of his life Martha Jane Wherry in 1950 when she was a sophomore and he was a senior at Vandergrift High School in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. Don went on to graduate from Penn State University with a BS in Civil Engineering. He became a lifetime member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. Don joined the ROTC while attending PSU and was drafted into the Navy in 1955. Don served two years in the US Navy Sea Bees as a Surveyor Petty Officer and four years in the Navy Reserves. Don started and ended his career with the Ohio Department of Transportation as a Chief Planning and Design Engineer. The majority of his career was spent working at W.E. Quicksall & Associates, an Engineering Consulting Firm, as a Principal Associate. Don was an active member of Rotary, Masons, Elks, and Shriners. Don enjoyed his retirement years in Tennessee and was an avid golfer, twice earning a hole-in-one. He also loved to fish with his grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Western Reserve Masonic Community, Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital, and Crossroads Hospice for their kindness and care.
A private family service will be held and, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Western Reserve Masonic Community in Medina, Ohio.
