Donald Marion Smith, affectionately known as “Smitty” and “Coach Smith” scored his final touchdown on Thursday, October 24th at the age of 81. He departed peacefully after a brief illness.
A proud graduate of Dover High School, Class of 1961, Don went on to work at Reeves Steel Mill and TV Specialties. His love for football and community ran deep – he coached 8th-grade football for 30 years and faithfully served as part of the Dover Tornadoes Friday night “Chain Gang” for an incredible 51 seasons.
Don was preceded in death by many loved ones, most notably his beloved wife, Shirley Jean Smith, with whom he shared 54 years until her passing in 2015, and his cherished grandson, Eric Lee Pryor, who left this world far too young in 2009.
Don’s legacy lives on through his family: his sons, Ron (Lisa) Smith and Jim (Millie) Smith; his daughter, Ginny Pryor; his two brothers, Larry Smith and David Miller; his sister, Pamela Miller; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In accordance with Don’s wishes, no formal service will be held. However, the family plans to host a celebration of his life this coming December, to gather and remember the incredible man he was. Those who wish to make a donation in his memory are encouraged to give to a charity of their choice or to Community Hospice at 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663. Condolences and special memories of Don can be shared with his family online at www.heritagecremationsociety.com
