Dorothy Mae Durrell (Burkhardt)

On March 25, 1930, a shining star was born. Dorothy Mae Durrell (Burkhardt) was born to Irwin and Carrie Burkhardt (Principe) in Cleveland in an area that is now Little Italy. She did many things in her life starting work at a young age as a clerk at a candy/tobacco store down in Terminal Tower waiting on the soldiers and businesspeople coming off the trains.

She had many achievements in her life, she was a manager of a Marriott Restaurant, an owner of a small trucking/airfreight company, when she retired, she sold antiques out of a shop in Wytheville VA. But if you were to ask her what her greatest achievement was, she would have probably told you it was being a wife to her beloved Kenneth, a mom to her kids Kenneth Jr., Robert, Richard (Linda), and Cathy Ann.

Her family was always what made her life complete. She enjoyed the adventures she would go on with Ken and her kids on the weekends. Then later in life spending time with her grandkids, Anthony (Cassie) and Robert (Missy). She was close to her brother John Burkhardt (Sandra), Dorothy Burkhardt, and their kids, Kathleen Szappanos (Frank), John Burkhardt Jr. (Sara), Linda Huter (Glenn), Kari Parker, Teresa Burkhardt (Renae), David Burkhardt (Maria), Scott Burkhardt (Tricia), and Valerie Burkhardt.

They would all spend many a weekend hanging at Euclid Beach, Pine Lake, Whips Ledges, or at someone’s house playing cards and cooking out with the whole family including her aunt Mary Nixon who she took care of for many years. She will always be remembered as a person who loved life, was curious, and enjoyed sharing stories with her family.

She loved people and animals and even fostered a raccoon named Bonnie, who became a part of their family. Some of her hobbies included bowling, which she won many awards for, dancing, painting, and gardening. She truly enjoyed spending time with her great grandkids, reading, and playing with them whenever she had a chance to. She will be missed by many. The Burkhardt’s and Durrell’s lost their matriarch, but our hope is she is now able to reconnect with family and friends who went before her.

Dorothy didn’t want a funeral, so a celebration of life will be held in her honor and announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to Ames Hospice House in Westlake who did a wonderful job taking care of her at the end. Their compassion, patience, and love won’t be forgotten.
