Edward Douglas DeHaas, age 83, of Canton, OH, passed away August 20, 2023 at home with family. Ed was born on March 20, 1940 in Salem, OH, a son to the late Kathleen (Starts) and Maximiliaan DeHaas. He attended Gross Pointe High School, received his undergraduate degree from Youngstown State University and graduated the Ohio State University with a Doctorate in Medicine.
Ed served as a medic during the Vietnam war where he was awarded 3 purple hearts and other medals of valor. After the war, Ed completed his career as a longtime physician in multiple ER and trauma centers in Stark and nearby counties. During his 40+ year medical career, he also practiced medicine two years on a Native American Reservation in Montana and another two years treating inmates at the Mansfield reformatory.
Ed will be remembered as a beloved husband, father and brother. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Connie Lou DeHaas; his son, Douglas DeHaas and granddaughter, Veronica Maxine DeHaas of Ballston Spa, NY; his sister, Sylvia (Bevington) Wince of Altoona, FL., his brother, Ronnie (Jeanne) DeHaas of Owosso, MI; his sister-in-law, Marlene Plautz of Gibsonia, PA; his step daughter(s), Erin (Steve) Harrison of Canton, OH; Kristen (Edouard) Tassy and their children, McKayla Hodges, Sheridan Tassy and Edouard Tassy, Jr. of Columbus, OH.
He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Max C. DeHaas, formerly of Gibsonia, PA.
Ed, aka “Doc” was a man of many interests. He was an avid card player and particularly enjoyed Monday night poker with his buddies at the American Legion, Post #44. Besides cards, he loved puzzles, board games and almost all competitive sports. Ed was a longtime, die hard (Indians) Guardians fan. He had a flair for magic tricks and enjoyed several performances as a standup comedian. Ed also had an entrepreneurial spirit and invented “Dr. Ed’s Skin Crème” as well as authored the short story , “The 100% Cure”.
Together, Ed and Connie travelled extensively during their marriage and visited many traditional and off the beaten path destinations. They also enjoyed many years of square dancing.
The family is extremely grateful to the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Hospice crew of Canton, OH whose support and assistance was invaluable. Lastly, to the Honor Flight Columbus 2018 program, the dignity and pride you bestowed upon this veteran will be forever well remembered.
A brief graveside service will be held Saturday, August 26, 2023 @ 11:00 a.m. at North Lawn Cemetery, 4927 Cleveland Ave NW, Canton, OH.
