Elaine Freda Davis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 9, 1943, to James F. Hall and Thelma E. Hall. Elaine was the first born to a family of five children. As the oldest sibling, Elaine shouldered some of the responsibility for the younger children of the family by shopping, cooking, and babysitting. As one sister shared, “Elaine was the quintessential epitome of an older sister, taking me to dance classes as a little girl, keeping me in line as a teenager and becoming my best friend as an adult.”
Elaine’s early education included attendance at both Our Lady of the Rosary School in Philadelphia and Holy Ghost Catholic School in Opelousas, Louisiana. Elaine graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School.
Elaine married following high school and the marriage produced two children, Lisa Renee, and Karl Jerome. One additional son was born to Elaine, Carlos Romero Donatto.
Elaine went to work as a Postal Clerk in an effort to provide for her children as a single mother. She was a dedicated worker for 29 years at the 30
th
Street Post Office in Philadelphia. Shortly after retiring from the Post Office, Elaine found fulfillment volunteering as a Grand Pal tutor for children in the Philadelphia, PA school system. Whether at work or volunteering, Elaine brought her professionalism, her laughter, and her friendship. People trusted her as a confidant and enjoyed working with her.
Elaine loved her time in Philadelphia, working, raising her children, enjoying the food and sights that are unique to the city. When her health began to fail, it was tough for Elaine to leave Philadelphia for Cleveland, Ohio. Once settled in Cleveland, Elaine found joy in the Cleveland Orchestra, the unique Cleveland food scene and a special favorite, Wade Oval Wednesdays. Elaine returned briefly to volunteering, as a tutor in the Cleveland School system and with the Hospice of the Western Reserve. Elaine moved into the Jennings Garfield campus, living independently initially and then into the long-term care facility.
Elaine was a dedicated and loving sister, a hard-working and generous mother, a doting and proud grandmother, and a beloved friend until her death on September 20, 2022. She will be missed and deeply grieved by family and friends alike.
