George H. Carter, age 84, passed away August 19, 2022, from a non-treatable form of liver cancer which was rapidly invasive. Mercifully, his suffering was cut short as the angels arrived quickly to take him home, according to his perfect faith in Jesus Christ.
He was born December 11, 1937, in Alexander City, Alabama, to the late William Harvey “Hob” and Ruby Esther (nee Speaks) Carter. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by many of his closest family members. He remained in deep and ongoing mourning for each of his loved ones, and spoke of them often.
George grew up in Akron, Ohio, and attended Garfield and Hower high schools. He loved his city, with the movie theaters, library, art museum, industry and people. An impeccable and stylish dresser, his particular pleasure was shopping for clothing at the wonderful boutiques and department stores that used to line Main Street.
He was an American patriot and served in the 3rd Armed Cavalry of the U.S. Army in the late 1950s. He was a tank operator. While stationed in Germany, he toured Europe and enjoyed spending time in Italy, the Isle of Capri, and Denmark. After returning, he labored at the Ford Motor Co. During his retirement years, he managed a grand old executive apartment building in Highland Square. He had continued his education through Ohio State, studying child psychology and journalism, coming within a few hours’ credit for his Associate’s Degree.
George was well-read on a wide variety of topics. He liked to lounge at the library, reading the papers and periodicals, and always had a wide assortment of books. He was keenly interested in movies and art. He enjoyed camping in the motorhome, playing mini-golf then going for ice cream with his granddaughter, walking in the park, having long, deep conversations, and traveling. A music lover, he regularly attended live concerts and musical events. He saw Elvis! And Moody Blues performing with the Cleveland Orchestra; he met Eric Burdon, and his crush, Melanie Safka. But all experiences were surpassed when his granddaughter took him to Las Vegas for his 80th birthday, and together they saw Cher! He basked in the love, fun and awe of that vacation extravaganza forevermore.
George was deeply devoted to his family. He was steadfastly there to provide a helping hand, whether it be a ride, or some cash, or a shoulder to cry on and some guidance. Warm, loving, kind, thoughtful, intelligent, witty, generous and good-natured, he took an individual interest in each of us, and was a great comfort. A strong, interesting and beautiful person with a deep personality, we loved being in his company.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Tony Michael Carter, and George Thomas “Tom” Hilling; daughter, Mickie Brown; only grandchild and “Favorite Granddaughter,” Karia Lynn (Craig) Lanken, sister, Peggy Lou Carter Talbot; nephews, John Baldwin, Larry (Karen) Baldwin, Henry “Butch” (Chrissy) Carter Jr., Darren Carter, Steven (Cheryl) Fulton, and Brendan Murphy; nieces, Angie (Robert) Williams, Bernita (Chris) McGoldrick, Samantha (Arnel) Sevilla, and Mandie Johnson; numerous great-nieces and nephews; many friends and extended family.
Heartfelt appreciation is extended to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the V.A. Medical Center in Cleveland for their exceptionally warm and dedicated care.
Cremation has taken place. Services will be announced.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
