Greg Shaver (63), of North Canton, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Christ his Savior, on December 26, 2023, while holding the hand of his beloved wife, Valerie, with his step-son, Jonathan, at his side. Greg was born on August 6, 1960 in Clyde, to Donna (Heimbaugh) Shaver and the late William Shaver.
In addition to his father, Greg was preceded in death by his brother, Steven Shaver (Maryann). He is survived by the love of his life of 20 years, Valerie (Behling) Shaver; daughter, Megan Ayers (Matt); step-son, Jonathan Mencer (Jackie); step-daughter, Meghan Mencer; grandchildren: Joseph Ayers, Patrick and Gabriella Mencer; mother, Donna Shaver; sister, Sharon (Sam) Mendoza; brothers: Eric (Tammy) Shaver, and Andy Shaver; sister-in-law, Maryann Shaver; mother-in-law, Betty Behling, of the home, and many loved nieces, nephews, and treasured friends.
Greg graduated from Malone University with his Master’s Degree in counseling, and was a counselor and much respected adjunct professor, by profession. He was also a very talented woodcarver, by hobby. He loved carving and teaching the art of carving to young people, and shared his hobby with his wife, who painted his carvings.
Words to fully describe Greg are so hard to find. He was a big strong man, a deep thinker, a quiet, contemplative observer of people, who could appear to be intimidating at times. That never fooled the little ones, who were drawn to him. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a dimpled smile that would light up a room, and a kind and tender spirit. He was generous with his time and resources. Greg looked forward to spending time with his great friends, David and Steve, having adventures on their many trips to Gettysburg, and time spent in fellowship in the Word with his Bible study group friends at Cigar 30.
Greg and Valerie were best friends, and truly loved just being together. They especially enjoyed time spent with their kids, grandkids and dogs, Willow and Evie, at their family cabin in West Virginia. He deeply and unconditionally loved his family and friends and was very fond of his coworkers and clients. He touched so many lives and will be forever in our thoughts and hearts.
Most of all, Greg loved the Lord. He was a faithful spiritual leader for his family and a powerful witness for Christ. His favorite scripture was Philippians 4:13, and he lived his life dedicated to serving Christ in all that he did.
A celebration of Greg’s life will be held at the Wilderness Center in the Spring. Memorial gifts can be sent to SpringHaven Counseling Center 15550 Durstine Road, Dundee, OH 44624, or The Wilderness Center Woodcarver’s Club 9877 Alabama Avenue SW, Wilmot, OH 44689.
