Hubert N. Brown

Hubert N. Brown (“Brownie”), 96, formerly of Salem, Ohio, died on Feb. 12, 2019. He was born April 6, 1922 in Bluefield, West Virginia to Pearl and William T. Brown.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Brown; his sister, Mary Hull; his brothers, William and James Brown; and his son, Richard Brown.

He is survived by his dear sister, Doris Sonagere; daughter Cheryl Brown Drake; son-in-law Richard Drake; daughter-in-law, Sue Brown; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He proudly served in the Navy during World War II as a forward torpedoman on the

USS Pampanito

, currently located at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Anyone who knew Hubert knows that this was a defining period in his life. Later, he was self-employed as the owner/operator of Brown’s Sohio in Salem on E. State St. After retiring from the service station business, he and Dorothy spent time taking care of Churchill Crest Farm, their 88-acre farm outside of Lisbon, Ohio. He was proud of his family and enjoyed woodworking (including operating his sawmill), taking care of livestock, harvesting crops, and making improvements on the farm. He always had multiple projects in the works.
