Janet Marie McClurkin (nee Jacob), passed away in her sleep on October 05, 2022. She, along with her twin Jean Louise (who pre-deceased her), was born April 02, 1938 in Huntington, Indiana. Her family soon moved to Hinsdale, Illinois, then to Sarasota, Florida in the early 1950’s.
Janet attended Florida State with her brother and sister, but left to start working as a secretary, and finished her BA degree later at Simmons College in Boston. She married Ens. David Keith McClurkin, USN in 1959, and was soon traveling the world as a Navy wife, visiting or living in Guam, Japan, The Philippines, Hong Kong, and Hawaii throughout the 1960’s. David’s last duty station was at the USN’s Cleveland Finance Center and, after he retired in 1979, Janet and David stayed in the Cleveland area that they had grown to love, moving from Avon Lake to Bay Village, then to Shaker Heights, Beachwood, and Chagrin Falls, with a brief stay in Boston, Massachusetts to stir things up. Janet adored her family, her friends, her garden, baking, sewing, knitting, and her Simmons alumna group.
She is survived by her loving husband David, children Heidi Pope (Stephen), Gretchen Farrell (Michael), and James, her beloved grandson Ethan Farrell, her dear brother Bruce R. Jacob, and her cherished nieces and nephews.
Burial will take place in Chicago, IL at a later date. Condolences and special memories of Janet can be shared with her family online at
