John Higgs, 76, of Olmsted Township passed away on June 7, 2024.
John was the loving husband of the late, Sheila Higgs. He is survived by his children, Heather Sayers (Michael) and John Higgs (Stacie), his grandson, Kolton Higgs, his brother, Thomas Higgs and sister, Ann Chaney. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie and his siblings, Judy, Paul, and Mary.
John spent his life in service to others. First serving our country as a corpsman in Vietnam and later as a Cleveland firefighter. John touched many lives near and far. He was called an “Angel of the Jungle” by the Marines he served with for the selflessness he showed while taking care of them in the hardest of circumstances. John was a dedicated coach and volunteer for Hot Stove and Pee-Wee football, never missing a game or wrestling match. He enjoyed announcing Pee-Wee football games and was a huge fan of our teams and our friends. John is a past Commander of VFW Post 9340 where he spent many hours working to improve the post and our community. He was part of the athletic boosters that helped cap the seats at the high school football stadium as well as getting the lights turned back on for Friday Night Football. He was a friend, mentor, sounding board, and storyteller to everyone that he spent time with. He was always ready with a story or a joke if it was needed and loved having new people to tell them too. Whether you knew him for a few minutes or 70 years the impact he had was life changing.
A memorial gathering will be held July 13th at the Columbia Station VFW starting at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Thomas P. Perciak Family Residential Hospice or to a veteran’s charity in John’s name. Condolences and special memories of John can be shared with his family online at www.heritagecremationsociety.com
