Julia Miklos Maruskin, 90, of Boardman, passed away surrounded by family on September 22nd, 2019.
Julia was born in Youngstown, Ohio to Joseph S. Miklos and Julia Potemra Miklos. She graduated from Chaney High School in 1946 and earned her BS in Education from Youngstown College in 1949. Julia married Joseph F. Maruskin in 1950, riding away from their wedding reception on the tailgate of Joe’s pickup truck. Julia taught at Highland and Stambaugh Elementary Schools and earned her master’s degree in Reading from Youngstown State University in 1977. She was co-owner of the Hollywood Tavern with her husband. An avid fabric artist, Julia later opened her own quilt shop, Quilter’s Quarters, retiring at the age of 85.
Julia served the community as a PTA President, Girl Scout leader and CCD teacher. She was a strong supporter of the Mahoning Valley Retired Teachers Association and local historic groups. She lovingly made hundreds of baby blankets for friends and family and was a quilt guild officer as well as a quilt judge. It seemed she knew everyone, and adored conversation with friends and customers.
She will be deeply missed by her children, Jane (Steve) Furgas, Joseph A. (Debbie) Maruskin, and Elaine (Eric) Roberts; grandchildren Adam (Amy) Maruskin, Katie (Carl) Christian, Lewie Roberts and Rachel Roberts; and great-grandchildren Rylee Maruskin and Madison Christian. Her nieces and nephews will certainly miss their affable Aunt June or Auntie Judy.
Family will receive guests at 10 AM in the vestibule of Saint Charles Catholic Church, 7345 Westview Drive in Boardman on Monday, September 30 and a Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio, The Butler Institute of American Art, or a library of your choice. Condolences can be shared with the family online at www.heritagecremationsociety.
