László Varga

January 5, 1940 — June 24, 2024

Cleveland

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing, on June 24, 2024, of László Varga, beloved son of Vendel and Katherine Varga (both deceased). He was a cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Born January 5, 1940, in Börcs, Hungary, László often shared stories and fond memories from his childhood there. In 1956, during the Hungarian revolution, his family immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio where he lived for the remainder of his life. Determined to acclimate to his new country, he poured himself into learning English, and graduated from Benedictine High School two years later. He then went on to earn his Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Akron, where he also played for their soccer team. He and his first wife, Rózsa (Nagy), raised their two children, Susan and Peter, surrounded by their closeknit family. László spent much of his career as a professional engineer working for RTA, and later retired from there. He and his wife and companion for the past 30+ years, Csilla (Yaczo), enjoyed biking, dancing, traveling, attending events, and donating time and resources to the many local Hungarian organizations.

László’s life was a testament to love, compassion, and generosity. While not needing to be the center of attention, he exhibited a genuine desire to be in community with family and friends, always bringing joy and positive energy with him everywhere he went. In addition to his passion for spending time with family and friends, László enjoyed a lifelong love for good food, and ALL things Magyar (Hungarian).

László’s love for his family knew no bounds. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan (Robert) Malek, and he leaves behind his beloved wife, Csilla; his sister, Kathleen (Peter) Roethler; his son, Peter (Tiffany); his stepsons, Stephen Wegling and Michael Wegling; and his grandchildren, Maria (Matthew) Gariboldi, Jacob and Lauryn Varga, Audrey, Evelyn, Matthew, and Stephen Wegling; and his great grandchildren, Cameron and Riley Gariboldi; as well as nieces, nephews and friends throughout the U.S. and Hungary, all of whom were profoundly touched by his presence.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in honor of László to: Cleveland Hungarian Museum  https://clevelandhungarianmuseum.org/donations/monetary-donations-general-fund/  OR American Hungarian Friends of Scouting https://csbk.org/en/use-paypal-for-secure-online-paymentsdonations/
