Mark D McVaney, age 61, from Canal Fulton Ohio passed away on March 22, 2024 at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Medina after a courageous nineteen month battle with cancer.
Mark was born June 15, 1962 in Akron Ohio to David and Shirley (Neal) McVaney. He graduated from Northwest High School in Canal Fulton in 1980. Mark worked as a laborer and then mason with his father David at McVaney Masonry for over 30 years. Mark then worked at Air Enterprises Inc in Akron for 17 years.
Mark is survived by his wife of 39 years Julie (Chevraux) McVaney, daughter, Amanda McVaney(Jordan), son, Shea McVaney(Lindsey), grandchildren, Travis and Riley Young, parents, David and Shirley McVaney, brother, Steve McVaney (Lisa) and nephews, Stephen (Sarah) and Michael McVaney.
Mark’s passion in life was coaching and mentoring student athletes. Mark coached his children Amanda and Shea in soccer, basketball, softball and baseball in Northwest youth and high school sports and Ss. Philips and James School. Most recently he helped to coach his grandson Travis’s basketball and baseball teams in Tuslaw Youth Leagues. Mark spent 20 years coaching high school girls’ basketball with his AAU Air Attack McVaney team. Over 160 of his players received college scholarships to play basketball. Several went on to play professionally. Many of Mark’s players are continuing his coaching legacy by coaching at the youth, high school and college levels.
Mark was an avid weight lifter his entire life. He enjoyed both body building and power lifting. He spent many hours discussing this shared passion and watching bodybuilding competitions with his cousin, Allen McVaney.
Mark looked forward to yearly family vacations to Myrtle Beach with his parents, children and grandchildren. He loved getting wiped out by waves when boogie boarding, playing catch, digging deep holes in the sand and building sand castles with his kids and then grandkids and keeping score for the family’s daily mini golf competition.
Mark was a huge sports fan! He loved all sports but baseball was his favorite. As a child he spent his whole allowance buying baseball cards and amassed quite a collection. Living in Columbus for 3 years while Julie went to Ohio State turned him into a big Buckeye football fan and he loved going to the “Shoe” for games. He enjoyed watching NFL and Ohio State football games with his lifelong friend Bob Schilling. Mark went to many local high school and college basketball games to support his AAU athletes who were either playing or coaching. Mark’s greatest joy in the last 5 years was sharing his love of all things sports with his grandson Travis. When the grandkids were at our house Mark would help Travis with his pitching technique for baseball, then they would throw the football around and finally they would work on basketball skills and shooting in the driveway. They would watch games together on TV and Travis would impress Grandpa with his knowledge of sports players past and present. He loved helping Travis with his Math homework. They were truly two peas in a pod!
Our family would like to thank Dr. Mehoul Patel, Charity and Nikki of Western Reserve Hospital Oncology, the nursing staff (Cheryl, Colleen, Courtney, Jane, Julie and Kelley) at Western Reserve Hospital Infusion Center, the Radiology Department at Western Reserve Hospital and the entire staff of the Hospice of Western Reserve Medina.
