Matthew Joseph Ryan III, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023, after a nearly two-decade journey through Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born August 28, 1938, to Matthew Ryan, Jr. and May Tupper Ryan in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Matt was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bambach, daughters Judith and Sarah, daughter-in-law Alice, grandson Cooper, and grand-dog Boomer.
Matt joined the Air Force straight out of high school; he was a natural athlete and a lefty, so he was soon assigned “duty” as a baseball pitcher in summer and hockey goalie in winter. After the military, he worked nights, weekends, and summers to put himself through Bentley College in Boston, where he studied business and accounting. He went on to a highly successful career as a benefits consultant and senior manager of consulting businesses throughout the Northeast.
During work life in New England and in retirement in Savannah, Matt’s athleticism continued to be on display. He took up tennis and golf and became an accomplished distance runner, even completing the Boston Marathon. After he and Dot married in 1990, she encouraged him to join her bird walks; soon they began traveling the world to see sought-after bird species in over a dozen countries.
Matt had high expectations for his employees and pushed them to meet those standards, but he will be remembered as kind, caring, and a perfect gentleman to all. Sometimes his impish smile appeared, and you knew he was about to poke fun or launch a practical joke. His laugh made him a favorite among the skilled and compassionate caregivers at Arden Courts of Chagrin Falls, the memory care facility where he spent his final three years.
Pursuant to Matt’s wishes, there will be no funeral or other service; cremation will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to Bentley College or Arden Courts of Chagrin Falls.
