Ray C. Newberry 83 of Ravenna, Ohio died on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at home surrounded by family. Born November 20, 1939 in Red Boiling Springs, Jackson County, Tennessee, he is the son of the late Chester and Mazelle (Webb) Newberry. He served six years in the Army entering in February of 1957. He served in Erlangen, Germany. In October of 1959 he married the late June M. Furman. Later he was a full-time police officer for eight years for the Lawrence Township Police Department in Canal Fulton, Ohio. From there he went to work for Ford Stamping Plant in Northfield, Ohio where he met the late Beth Rau in 1980. They married in October of 1981. Then they moved to Mayfield, Kentucky and bought a small farm raising cows, horses, two sheep named Mork and Mindy and two pigs named Elvira and Charlies. Ray went back to being a full-time police officer until retirement. He returned to Ohio with his stepdaughter, Judy Yarbrough, where they resided in Ravenna, Ohio until his death. He had studied with Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the Streetsboro Kingdom Hall.
He is survived by one sister, Mildred from Mayfield, KY; two daughters, Mary (Ron) Bodkins of Canton and Valerie (Bill) Pentrich of Mayfield, KY; stepchildren, Linda (Gary) Bennett of Mantua, Gaye (Don) Bennett of Mantua, Judy Yarbrough of the home, Jay Rau of Sagamore Hills; great-great grandson, Thomas who at 15 months old made sure his grandpa got his ice cream cone first, then Thomas would go get his. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Newberry of Mayfield; daughter, Tina Miller of Barberton; and Jimmy Yarbrough of Lovelaceville, KY.
Celebration of Life was held last fall due to Ray’s declining health due to Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Cremation has taken place. We will hold a memorial service with military honors Friday, September 29, 2023 at 4:00pm at 3051 Douglas St., Ravenna, Ohio.
