Robert Francis Stockhausen, 76, lived a life filled with love, laughter, and endless curiosity. Known for his boundless energy and passion for conversation, Robert was always ready to explore new ideas—whether in faith, relationships, or with anyone willing to share a cup of coffee and chat. He passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and connection. A proud veteran of the US Army and the Vietnam War, Robert had an unwavering sense of duty. His dedication extended far beyond his service, as he remained active in veterans’ groups, including the Cleveland Grays Armory, where he built lifelong friendships. Bob’s pride in his alma mater, St. Ignatius High School, was unmatched. In 1990, he organized a color guard to represent each branch of the U.S. military with flags at every St. Ignatius football game – a tradition that continues to this day. He also helped hundreds of fathers and sons strengthen their relationships by organizing whitewater rafting trips through the St. Ignatius Father’s Club.
Bob’s zest for life was most evident at home. He transformed the house he shared with his beloved wife, Mary, into a floral wonderland of roses, boxwoods, and many other plants. When he wasn’t tending to his gardens, Bob was busy with DIY projects—painting walls with bright colors or installing intricate light fixtures. While he loved Mardi Gras, Halloween, and many other holidays, his favorite time of year was Christmas, when his decorating talents truly shone. Two Christmas trees were the bare minimum, with ornaments adorning chandeliers, curtain rods, and any surface he deemed in need of holiday spirit. Robert loved the open road as much as his cozy home. He and Mary traveled to the Florida Keys every year, where, at 72, he took up snorkeling, determined to experience the ocean’s beauty firsthand. His adventurous spirit thrived on these trips, visiting family in Canada or simply enjoying the journey with Mary by his side. A man of deep faith, Robert was a long-standing member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Cathedral, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and altar server. His connection to his community was equally strong, as he spent several years teaching PSR for children at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Parish in Lorain. Above all, Robert cherished his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Lauren (Jordan) Gilmore, Edward (Will), and Marc (Kyle); his brother William Stockhausen; his father’s wife, Jane Stockhausen; and his beloved, blended family: Andy and Billie Miller and their children Olivia, Reese, and Madelyn; and Alex and Amanda Miller and their children Jacob, Ben, and Victoria. He now joins his parents, Pauline and Robert Sr., in eternal peace. Robert’s love for life, family, and adventure will forever be remembered by those lucky enough to have known him. His legacy lives on in every garden he cultivated, every conversation shared, and every memory held dear.
A memorial mass will take place at 9am on Saturday, November 9, at St. Mary’s Chapel at St. Ignatius High School. In lieu of flowers, gifts in remembrance of Robert may be made to support tuition assistance at St. Ignatius High School, because Bob would take great pride in supporting the formation of the next generation of Men for Others.
