Ronald Mark Rice, 82, of Massillon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025. Born on November 5, 1942, in Massillon, Ronnie was a proud graduate of Washington High School (Class of 1960) and a lifelong supporter of the Massillon Tigers.

Ronnie’s life was marked by his dedication, leadership, and passion. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965, where he was stationed in Alaska. During his service, Ronnie earned the nickname “Oatmeal” for his grit as an outstanding running back on the intramural football team. He also helped train the 1964 USA Olympic Biathlon Team.

Notably, he was honored as Soldier of the Month on five occasions—a prestigious recognition awarded to those demonstrating exceptional dedication to duty, superior leadership, and outstanding professional knowledge, military bearing, discipline, and technical proficiency.

After his military service, Ron built a distinguished career as the General Manager of Safeway of Canton. Under his leadership, the company expanded with two additional locations in Youngstown and Cleveland. In his later years, he enjoyed working at the Legends of Massillon Golf Course, where he shared his wit and warmth with many good friends.

An avid outdoorsman and lover of life, Ron found joy in spending summers on the Portage Lakes, cruising on his pontoon boat, surrounded by loved ones. He had an infectious personality, a kind and generous spirit, and a presence that could light up any room. He was tough, loyal, and always someone you wanted on your side.

He was always accompanied by his beloved wife Brenda and often his children and grandchildren. Music was a constant companion on these outings—whether it was the Massillon Tiger Swing Band’s rendition of “Tiger Rag” or any music that he happened to find exciting. He listened to a multitude of genres which added an extra layer of joy to these cherished moments.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Terrance Rice, and siblings David, Fred, Caroline (McMullin), Barbara (Monetary), Elaine (McKinney), Marion (Caldwell), and Peggy (Robinson).

He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; children Elaine (Mike “my boy”) Lombardi and Matt (Sarah); stepsons Mike Tyler and Troy Tyler; siblings Martin, Jim, Ruth (Raucci), Pam (Hopkins), and Becky; nine grandchildren—Megan, Michaela, Meredith, Madelyn, Skyler, Courtney, Ashley, Aubrey, and Olivia; and two great-grandchildren, Brooks and Cameron.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember Ron’s perseverance, vibrant spirit, kindness, and his unwavering loyalty. His legacy of generosity, strength, and infectious joy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
