In Loving Memory
Roy “Pop” Rodgers, born July 28, 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida passed away on March 31, 2018. Roy was a proud veteran of the United States Army, who received his GED while in the service. He walked through life his own way observing few grey areas. He was a master tinkerer who could fix just about anything he touched, from working on locomotive trains to car brakes, and anything in between. On any given day you’d have found him sitting in his front yard, people watching, firing up the barbeque grill or walking along the East 55
th
St. Marina (parallel to Lake Erie), taking in the waves crashing against the shore. He was easygoing, observant, keen and kind and he loved the simple pleasures in life.
Roy also had a few things that would energize him: Talking about his kids/grandkids, sports (The Cleveland Browns, The Cleveland Cavaliers), politics and every now and then, sitting at a black jack/poker table while drawing everyone in with his charm. He loved to enjoy his life, however, if needed he was always willing to give you his last dollar, regardless of his needs. His energy was infectious and genuine in every way and no one could deny it’s presence when encountering him whether it be for the first time or over many years.
We love and will miss Roy “Pop” Rodgers. You will always have a permanent place in our hearts.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife Veronica Upshaw, father, Willie Rodgers; mother, Irene Bennett; brothers, Rufus Johnson and Willie Rodgers.
He is survived by his sons, Jesse Rodgers, Joseph Roy Rodgers, Denzell Rodgers; daughters, Amanda K. Rodgers, Veranda Coleman, Rashunda Upshaw; Brother, Arthur Rodgers; Sisters, Mary Edmondson, Maggie Mosely and many other loving members of the Rodgers, Upshaw, Sanders and Johnson families including Queenie Johnson.
