SANFORD J. BERGER. It is with deep, and heavy sadness that we announce the death of Sanford Jason Berger, who passed on May 22, 2014, at Montefiore, in Beachwood, Ohio. Sanford “Buddy” was born on June 29, 1926, in Cleveland and he lived in the area all of his life. Predeceased by his parents, Ida (nee Solomon) and Samuel Berger, brother, Herbert Berger, and his former wife, Bertine Benjamin, with whom he raised their children in Beachwood. He bravely served in WWII as a Merchant Marine on the Dalton Victory. Receiving his Juris Doctor at Western Reserve Law School, he argued two cases before the United States Supreme Court. Amazingly articulate, he also ran for Family Court Judge. He was often seen helping his parents at their Cleveland Restaurant, The Excelsior, making sandwiches and typing the daily menu. His life’s delight was at the family cottage in Willoughby, on Lake Erie, where he would share robust meals and bad jokes with family and friends, along with fishing , swimming and boating. He is survived by his loving and devoted partner of over 30 years, Marcia Saul; his son, Bradley A. Berger and his wife, Debra; granddaughters, Jessica and Abby; and his daughter, Bonnie J. Berger and her partner, Rosemarie. A memorial service will be held on JUNE 2, 2014 AT 10:30 AM at Montefiore, 1 David N. Myers Parkway, Beachwood. The family asks that no flowers be sent. Instead, donations can be made to either to The Lake Erie Nature Conservancy or the Ohio Airedale Rescue.
