Stephen William McCann

Stephen William McCann, 57, of Pepper Pike, Ohio, passed away on December 29, 2023 after a battle with cancer.

Born on March 13, 1966 in Pasadena, California, Stephen was the youngest son of the late Suellen McCann (née Taylor) and James William McCann. Shortly after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, Stephen’s family moved from California to Shaker Heights, Ohio. After graduating from Shaker Heights High School in 1984, Stephen went on to study at Bowling Green State University.

Stephen then started McCann Residential Services, a remodeling company with a storefront at Fairmount Circle. His construction career included project management, leading a newly formed construction management division at R.L. Bowen & Associates, he was a Journeyman carpenter, and remodeled investment properties.      

However, Stephen’s passion was first playing then coaching ice hockey. He played for the Shaker Heights Red Raiders and advanced to the Cleveland Junior Barons.  He inspired many young men and women to love the game including Mac and Mia by using a positive coaching style.  A favorite saying was that “kids on ice are out of hot water.”

Stephen lived his life by simple, tried-and-true principles, believing that while it is nice to be important, it is more important to be nice. His generous spirit and big heart touched all of those who had the honor to know him. He will be dearly missed. 

Stephen is survived by his fiancée, Joey Glassco (née Bard), children Mia Glassco and Stephen “Mac,” Sarah, and Katie McCann, brothers Ben (Patricia), Keith (Jennifer), Brian (Julie), nieces and nephews Casey, Jordan, Madeleine, Luc, Noelle, Ona, Emma, and Isabele, and his faithful Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Bauer.

Services will be held at St. Christopher's By-The-River, 7601 Old Mill Road, Gates Mills, Ohio on January 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation or the USA Hockey Foundation.
