Wayne Lackner

Wayne Lackner, 76, of Kent, OH, passed away at home, Thursday, December 26, 2020. He was born on July 18, 1944, to John and Jean (Sessane) Lackner and raised in Euclid, OH. He graduated from Euclid High School, then earned a Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with an emphasis in Philosophy from Kent State University. He was a natural and lifelong salesman and had sold mausoleum space, vending machines, commercial signs, cars, real estate, and insurance during his career. For most of his career, he found fulfillment in working with small businesses all around northeast Ohio and supporting the families who ran them.

Wayne loved his family and friends above all else and always stayed in touch. His closely-knit extended family was a big part of his life. His interesting cadre of friends made his life rich. Wayne was devoted to living by the virtues that he held dear – a simple non-material lifestyle, a devotion to Roman Catholic philosophy, connection with people, education on human sciences and language, and always (always) support of the underdog. From the awkward youth baseball player, to his aging mother who was long in his care, to new acquaintances from daily life, he focused his energy on those who could benefit from it. From a childhood of growing up – often literally – on Lake Erie, he had a lifelong passion for the open water. He served as a merchant marine as a young adult and sailed most of the seven seas. He went back to Lake Erie often, especially with old friends, and visited the ocean again and again in his travel throughout his life. Fixing and tinkering with car engines and other car mechanicals were lifelong pursuits that he shared and learned from his brother and father. He expressed his Roman Catholic faith by visiting monasteries, abbeys, and other religious sites in the United States and Europe, particularly in Portugal. He travelled Portugal comprehensively over dozens of trips and even learned Portuguese in adult education classes. He found his Portugal home-away-from-home in Estoril where he found peace next to the ocean in a favorite historic hotel. He loved learning the history of the places he visited, and he developed an expertise for the well-known and lesser-known locations, which he shared with friends and family. Rest in peace, Wayne! May you be greeted in Heaven with warmth and solace!

He leaves behind children, Rick (Stacey) Lackner, Alex (Hilary) Lackner; grandchildren, Annika Lackner, Mason Lackner, Cordelia Lackner, and Huxley Lackner.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Lackner, Jr.
