Winnifred Marrittee Blozis

April 10, 1933 — June 11, 2023

Surrounded by her family, Winnifred Marrittee Blozis (nee Nelson), 90, passed away on Sunday, June 11th, 2023, at Laurel Lake Crown Center in Hudson, Ohio after a long but courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Winnie was born on April 10, 1933, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Edgar M. and Winnifred A. (nee Nelson) Nelson. She spent her childhood in Ohio but made numerous visits to large extended families in Minnesota.

Winnie graduated from The Ohio State University with a BA in Education. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. It was there she met her late beloved husband of 67 years, George Gordon Blozis.

Together they lived in Chicago, IL, Dayton, OH, Columbus, OH and Hudson, OH. After her first child, Winnie retired from teaching. She was actively involved in her children’s activities and in her community. She was a member of the TWIG of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Starling Medical and Dental Women’s Auxiliary and various positions on the Alumni Board of Alpha Phi. She also enjoyed playing competitive tennis and golf over the years. She was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church in Columbus, OH.

She will be remembered for her love of family, kindness to others, fashion sense, and genuine interest in people. She could strike up a conversation with anyone. Winnie lit up a room with her smile and her style; many of the outfits she sewed herself as an accomplished seamstress. She loved to entertain and spent time organizing parties in an idyllic neighborhood full of friends. A dedicated Buckeye, she and George enjoyed countless home and away OSU football games with their friends, the Travelling Squad.

To be closer to family and grandchildren, George and Winnie spent their twilight years at Laurel Lake Retirement Community where they made many new friends. A special thank you to the Laurel Lake Crown Center and NE Ohio Hospice with their devoted staff, who took wonderful care of Winnie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Winnifred; husband, George; sister and brother-in-law, Jack and Arlene Wilt; and brother, Edwin Nelson.

She is survived by her brother, James Nelson; son, Stephen (Caryl) Blozis; daughters, Karen (Patrick) Stocker, and Nancy (Michael) McNelis; and grandchildren, Thomas Blozis, Benjamin Stocker, Caroline Stocker, Nathaniel Stocker, Meredith McNelis, Jack McNelis, and many nieces and nephews.

A service and burial will be held on October 5, 2023, at Union Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, George.
